REIKI provides the benefits of safe, loving touch; and offers the healing light of compassion. It promotes relaxation, which facilitates self-healing. It supports better life choices for ourselves (eating, exercising, etc.). It is an effective tool to help deal with addiction, depression, grief, pain, and other chronic problems. Reiki is a safe, gentle, powerful practice that serves for many as a sort of opening or gateway to spiritual and unseen energetic realms.

What can you expect from a Reiki session? A session is usually about an hour and a half long. Most people experience that time as deeply relaxing. Some drop off to sleep; others find themselves in quiet meditation; and others drift peacefully in a sort of twilight state. During Reiki, people often experience insights and emotional release that they find healing. You remain fully clothed throughout the session, relaxing on a massage table and covered with a light sheet or blanket. Channeling Reiki, I place my hands gently on you, head to toe, excluding the private areas and any other areas where you prefer not to be touched. Reiki does not involve manipulation. Reiki may also be done without direct contact with the client's body (from several inches or feet away). In fact, many people report that distance Reiki (where client and practitioner are in different geographical locations) is an effective healing practice. You need not use a massage table for Reiki, nor step through all of the formal hand positions. It may be done bedside in hospital, with hands simply on a shoulder or arm. Self-Reiki as a daily practice is beneficial no matter the circumstances of our lives.

I was first introduced to Reiki in 1999 by a friend who used it in her work as a hospice volunteer. I experienced Reiki as immediately life-changing, and continue (many years later) to ride the waves of change it initiated for me. My Reiki practice has always been shamanic, even before I was introduced to shamanism.

The Reiki Precepts are interpreted in a variety of ways. One interpretation I like is: For today only let go of anger, let go of worry; be grateful and humble. Do your work honestly and with appreciation. Be kind to all living things. In the morning and at night, with hands held in prayer, think this with your mind, chant this with your mouth. Mikao Usui

Some say that Reiki is an ancient healing art.  Dr. Mikao Usui discovered, or rediscovered Reiki, in 1914. While enrolled in training at a Tendai Buddhist Temple on Mount Kurama in Japan, he experienced an epiphany, and experienced Reiki.  He built a clinic in 1925, following a devastating earthquake in Tokyo.  He trained and attuned others to practice Reiki, and the practice has been passed down, person-to-person. Anyone can be attuned and learn to practice Reiki to help heal themselves and others.

“Rei” means “Universal/Spiritual Consciousness”; “Ki” means “Life Force” (“Chi” in Chinese, “Prana” in Sanskrit.)  William Lee Rand describes it as “spiritually guided life energy… both powerful and gentle.”  This energy flows through the practitioner.  The practitioner’s intention is to be a clear channel for Reiki, and for the highest good for the client - for the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing they need at this time.  Reiki is not a religion; people of many faiths practice Reiki.
